AI Background Remover

Upload a photo to remove its background automatically with an in-browser AI model, then add a new solid-color, image, or blurred background — like remove.bg, but nothing ever leaves your browser.

Works best with one clear subject (person, product, object)
The first time you use a quality level, your browser downloads its AI model (this can take a little while depending on your connection) — after that, it's cached and runs fast. Requires a reasonably modern browser.

How this works without a server

This tool uses an open-source AI model (from IMG.LY's background-removal library) that runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly — the same technology lets it detect the subject of a photo and separate it from the background without ever sending your image anywhere. It's slower than a cloud-based tool on the very first run (downloading the model), but every run after that is fast and fully private.

Improving accuracy

The "More accurate" option uses a larger model (about 80MB) that generally produces cleaner edges and handles trickier photos better than the "Faster" option (about 40MB), at the cost of a bigger one-time download and slightly longer processing. No free, fully in-browser model matches a paid cloud service like remove.bg on every photo — busy backgrounds, fine details like hair, and low-contrast edges remain the hardest cases for any automatic tool, not just this one.

Adding a background

Once the cutout is ready, choose a solid color, upload your own background image, or use a softly blurred version of the original photo (a common "portrait mode" look) — the chosen background is composited behind the cutout entirely on your device, and you can download the final result as a PNG.

Getting the best result

  • Photos with one clear subject and reasonable contrast against the background work best
  • Very busy backgrounds, motion blur, or subjects that blend into the background can confuse the model
  • If the edges look rough, try switching to "More accurate" and reprocessing

Frequently asked questions

Is this background remover really free?

Yes — there's no per-image charge, watermark, or account required. The AI model runs in your browser using open-source software, so there's no server cost being passed on to you.

How do I make the background removal more accurate?

Switch the Quality dropdown to "More accurate" before uploading your photo — it uses a larger AI model that generally handles fine detail and tricky edges better, at the cost of a bigger download and a bit more processing time.

Can I add my own background like remove.bg?

Yes — after the background is removed, use the "Add a background" section to choose a solid color, upload a custom background image, or apply a blurred version of the original photo, then download the composited result.

Why does this sometimes look less accurate than remove.bg?

Remove.bg runs a proprietary model on powerful servers; this tool runs a free, open-source model entirely on your own device for privacy and zero cost, which is a real trade-off — it generally does well on clear subjects but can struggle more than paid cloud tools on fine detail like hair strands or very busy backgrounds.

Does this work on any photo?

It works best on photos with one clear subject and reasonable contrast against the background — portraits, product shots, and similar images. Busy or low-contrast backgrounds, motion blur, or subjects that blend into their surroundings can produce a rougher cutout.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No — background removal and background replacement both run entirely inside your browser. Your image, and any background image you add, are never sent anywhere.
